Leanne Wong's path to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this weekend was cut short after she hyperextended her right knee during a training session. The injury, confirmed on Instagram, forced the Florida Gators alum to sit out the two-day event in Phoenix starting on Friday.
Recovery and setbacks
Wong was still recovering from a wrist injury that limited her to beam exercises at the U.S. Classic in July. That competition had already proven tricky for her. She fell during an aerial back layout on the beam, a skill she hadn’t trained in some time.
Her coach, Rowland, described the fall as disheartening but noted the incident gave her time to reflect. “It allowed her to take a step back and just be mindful of the process,” he said. Yet the new knee injury has pushed her into another recovery cycle, adding another obstacle before Worlds.
Missed opportunity for a spot on the team
Wong had qualified for the U.S. Championships by virtue of her second-place all-around finish at the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta. The event was a key step in her pursuit of a 2028 Olympic berth. Her absence in Phoenix could now make it harder to compete for a spot, unless she secures entry via a last-minute petition to selection camp.
She said in a post on social media that she trusted that her injury was part of a bigger plan. Unfortunately, I hyperextended my knee during yesterday’s podium training and will need to rest and recover.”
Young Gators still chasing goals
While Wong pulls back, Florida juniors like Skye Blakely and incoming freshmen Simone Rose, Dulcy Caylor and Jayla Hang are preparing to make their mark. They will compete in the Championships, aiming to earn a spot on the 2026 U.S. Senior National Team.
Wong’s withdrawal is a rare gap in a career that has seen her make every World Championships team since 2021. With her next move unclear, the focus now shifts to whether and how she will return to the floor in time for the next major meet.
