A's slugger Nick Kurtz is scheduled to see a hand specialist in Los Angeles to assess an ongoing issue with his right thumb. He was placed on the injured list on July 11, returned after two weeks, but has struggled with just one hit in 18 at-bats over the past seven games.
The 23-year-old has been a vital player this year, hitting 21 home runs and tallying 69 RBIs. He leads the majors in walks with 79 and ranks fourth in on-base percentage at .396 among qualifiers. His .879 OPS ranks 12th in the league.
Manager Mark Kotsay said the team will decide next steps after Kurtz's evaluation. Kurtz also dealt with a left forearm injury, struck by a pitch on Wednesday night, but still played in the next two games, though his production has dipped.
Other A's injury updates
Shortstop Jacob Wilson is sidelined due to knee tendinitis, keeping him out of fielding since Wednesday. He filled in as a DH in the past three games but was not in Sunday's starting lineup.
Right-hander J.T. Ginn is set to return from the injured list for Tuesday's opener against Cincinnati. Ginn has a 3.46 ERA and an 8-6 record this season.
Third baseman Zack Gelof is beginning a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. He has been out since July 10 after injuring his right knee during a wall collision.
