The essentials
  • Saudi Arabia will no longer fund LIV Golf after the end of the 2026 season.
  • LIV Golf needs $350 million in new investment to survive past 2026.

Martin Kaymer, a two-time major winner and captain of the Cleeks team, said Thursday that golfers are unsure about what the future holds for LIV Golf after the current season. The uncertainty comes after Saudi Arabia decided to stop funding the league beyond this year.

Scott O'Neil, who became LIV's chief executive in January 2025, is attempting to raise $350 million in new investment to keep the tour running. Upcoming events include stops in Staffordshire, New York, and Indianapolis, though the team championship in Michigan is uncertain, Kaymer noted.

Kaymer’s candid take

Kaymer shared that a recent meeting provided facts but no clear decisions. 'Even Scott can't tell us because he doesn't know. It depends so much on the investors,' he said. When asked if LIV could survive to 2027, Kaymer expressed cautious optimism. 'I think there's a lot of interest and it's looking good,' he added. 'But we've been through this before. If the signature is not there, then it doesn't mean anything.'

LIV is also facing setbacks as partnerships collapse. This week, the Asian Tour ended its connection with LIV and instead joined forces with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. O'Neil had hoped to rely on international open events and Asian Tour stops to build a new plan.

In another matter, LIV agreed to pay $1 million to settle a legal dispute with Stinger Golf, a manufacturer of golf tees based in Ohio. While the resolution is a minor win, it pales in comparison to the financial issues still looming.

“If those investors decide to pull out then we don't play next year on LIV Golf. And if they decide to do it, then we have a chance.”
