Love's Journey to Influence
From the moment Jordan Love stepped onto the Packers’ roster, he recognized the unique way Aaron Rodgers operated within the offense. Unlike what Love had witnessed in college, where quarterbacks primarily followed instructions from coaches, Rodgers was deeply involved in shaping how the offense worked.
Love watched closely how Rodgers communicated with head coach Matt LaFleur. He saw a mutual respect and a collaborative process, where both shared ideas and made adjustments. That relationship became a model for Love. "It was cool for me to be able to see that," Love said in an interview with Yahoo Sports. "To see how they just bounced stuff off each other, much different than what it was in college, to someone who just has complete control of the system."
Over the next three years, including two where Rodgers was named MVP, Love studied and grew. That’s my goal. I want to be able to have that communication with Matt when I take over." Now, entering his fourth season, Love and LaFleur have built that same dynamic. They regularly discuss ideas to reshape the Packers’ playbook. Love has grown more comfortable sharing his thoughts each year, and the relationship feels natural.
He has a 27-20-1 record and has thrown for 11,535 yards, completing 64.3% of his passes, with 83 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. Last season, in a playoff loss to the Chicago Bears, Love threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns. His 97.8 passer rating over 100+ pass attempts places him 11th among 75 quarterbacks in that category this season.
The Packers’ offense has seen some shifts in performance, ranking 16th in total yardage last year after finishing 12th and eighth in the two prior years under Love. With the offense constantly evolving, Love and LaFleur are tailoring the playbook to best suit Love’s strengths. Some concepts may become staples, while others are less frequently used based on how they complement Love’s style.
The receiving group has also changed significantly. The Packers traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles in April and lost Romeo Doubs to the New England Patriots in free agency. New faces like first-round pick Matthew Golden are joining the team. Golden, along with Christian Watson and Jayden Reed, is expected to form the starting trio of wide receivers for Green Bay.
Tight end Tucker Kraft is another key return. He suffered an ACL injury in October but is expected to be ready by the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. With Kraft back, the Packers have a more dynamic offensive group to build around Love. LaFleur and Love will continue to adjust the playbook, fine-tuning the offense to align with Love’s skills.
The growth of Love as a quarterback has not gone unnoticed. General manager Brian Gutekunst praised Love’s development, saying it is rare for a player to reach a point where they have "knowledge that of a coach." "It’s a great thing for Matt and a great thing for Jordan too. It becomes more of a partnership collaboration," Gutekunst said. "Early in your career, you're not there. As you start playing and adding all that expertise, you reach this level.
As Love continues to build his legacy with the Packers, the franchise is embracing the unusual stability they now enjoy at quarterback. With Love, LaFleur, and Gutekunst forming a strong partnership, the Packers are confident in their direction. And for Love, the journey from observer to leader is paying off.
