During his interview for the Florida job, he pointed out the lack of success as a major concern, and he's made it clear his goals for the program are to reverse that trend.
Sumrall contrasted the resources available at Florida with those from his previous stops, such as at Troy. 'I've got a full-time nutritionist now. I didn't have that at Troy,' he said. He also noted that Florida offers a staff of nutritionists, something he didn't have before. These resources, he argued, are crucial to the team's development. But they’re only part of the equation — Sumrall also wants his players to understand the value of their position and what it takes to succeed.
He made it a point to stress that success isn't just about talent. It's about the support system and the opportunities given to the athletes. 'I want everybody in our building to have an appreciation for the privileges that we're afforded each and every day,' Sumrall said. That includes the weight room, the training facilities, and the staff in place to help players reach their full potential.
O-Line Growth and New Scheduling
Sumrall expressed satisfaction with the progress of Florida’s offensive line during the spring and summer. 'I've been really pleased with the growth of our offensive line this summer, in particular the weight room,' he said. However, he acknowledged that when he first took over the program and reviewed tapes from January and February, he was less than impressed. He described the strength of the offensive line as 'underwhelming for me; not where I felt like it needed to be.' That initial evaluation pushed him to focus more on development.
The new SEC scheduling format that includes Texas for the third consecutive season has left Sumrall a bit puzzled. He described it as 'new and unique,' drawing a comparison to the old Florida-Tennessee rivalry. The lack of consistency in scheduling is something he's finding 'kind of weird.'
The Unlikely Fan and the Whining Kids
Sumrall's time in the Bahamas with his family offered an unexpected fan moment. While on vacation, he and his family were walking through a resort area when a man approached and asked, 'Are you Jon Sumrall?' After a brief exchange, the man said, 'Dude, I loved watching you play at the University of Kentucky.' Sumrall’s response was classic: 'You and two other people. I wasn't that good of a player.' He joked that his only real claim to fame was leading his team in tripping — a detail that wasn’t exactly a highlight of his playing career.
When asked about the last time he whined about something, Sumrall laughed and said it was probably due to his own kids. He joked that he has a household rule — 'no whining, no complaining, no excuses' — but he confessed that he often struggles to enforce it. About middle of the summer vacation, I usually look at my wife and I'm like, Why are they whining so much?'
