From the bench to the hall: Beilein's journey at Michigan
The lights will shine on John Beilein again at Crisler Center, but not for a game. This time, they’ll highlight a man who reshaped the trajectory of Michigan basketball. On Sept. 11, 2026, Beilein joins seven others in the Athletics Hall of Honor.
When Beilein took over, the program had gone nearly a decade without an NCAA Tournament appearance. Over his tenure, he guided the team to nine such berths, including two trips to the Final Four and two national title games in 2013 and 2018. During those 12 seasons, he posted a record of 278-150 and became the winningest coach in program history.
More than just victories, Beilein developed talent that made the leap to the NBA. He produced nine draft picks, seven in the first round, including consensus All-Americans Trey Burke and Nik Stauskas. Burke was named National Player of the Year in 2012-13, a season that helped cement Beilein’s legacy.
A Hall of Honor with a mix of legacy and achievement
Beilein is among eight inductees in the 2026 class. Alongside him are Joe McFarland (wrestling), Nikki Peters (women’s gymnastics), Bev Plocki (women’s gymnastics), Sierra Romero (softball), Kellen Russell (wrestling), Chris Sabo (baseball), and Shana Welch (water polo).
Each inductee has met the Hall’s rigorous criteria: they must have earned All-American honors, played on a national champion team, won an NCAA title, or made significant contributions to Michigan athletics. Beilein’s impact, both on and off the court, made him a clear fit for the honor.
A celebration of legacy and a pause in play
The induction ceremony will be held at Crisler Center, followed the next night by an on-field recognition during Michigan football's home game against Oklahoma. The stoppage in play will honor all the inductees and their lasting influence on the university’s athletic identity.
As the ceremony approaches, it will mark not just a celebration, but also a pause to reflect on how one man helped revive a program and send its players into the highest echelons of the sport.
For Beilein, the Michigan Athletics Hall of Honor — which was established in 1978 to 'recognize individuals who have made significant contributions as athletes, coaches and administrators to the tradition of Wolverine athletics and, in doing so, have enhanced the image and reputation of the University of Michigan' — will be another hall he's entered. In 2022, he was inducted into both the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
