First back-to-back wins since April
Huddersfield Giants made history by securing their second straight win of the season with a 22-16 victory over Hull FC at the Accu Stadium. This marked their first time winning two games in a row since April, following their earlier win over York. The result provided a much-needed confidence boost for a side that has struggled for consistency all season.
Despite the win, Huddersfield remain at the bottom of the Betfred Super League table. However, the two-point gap to 18th-placed Hull FC has put them in a tighter race at the lower end of the league. Every victory feels like a small step forward for a team hungry to claw their way up the standings.
From behind twice, but not out
Huddersfield started the game strongly, gaining an early lead when Harry Rushton found Chris Patolo with a clever inside ball, and Patolo crashed over the try line. George Flanagan added the conversion to give Huddersfield a 6-0 lead within the first few minutes. However, Hull FC responded quickly as Joe Batchelor dived over to level the score at 6-6 after being set up by a short pass from Jake Arthur.
Six minutes later, Hull took control of the match. Cade Cust delivered a brilliant break down the field, supported by Ethan O’Neill and Davy Litten, who finished off with a try in the corner. Zak Hardaker failed to add the extras, leaving Hull leading 10-6 at the interval.
Huddersfield almost pulled a try from the corner before the break, but Jacob Gagai’s attempt was ruled out after a video review. Despite the setback, the hosts regrouped and made a strong start to the second half. A well-timed kick by Tui Lolohea forced a knock-on from Hull, and Connor Wrench capitalized by grounding the ball behind the sticks to put Huddersfield back in front at 12-10.
Tight finish shows Huddersfield’s resilience
Hull FC retaliated with a swift counter-attack. Ethan O’Neill broke the line and offloaded to Davy Litten, who crossed the try line to give Hull a 16-12 lead. The hosts, however, refused to give up. Lewis Jagger dived over to level the score again, and after Hull were penalized for a high tackle, Flanagan dived behind the posts to seal the 22-16 win.
The final score reflects the back-and-forth nature of the match and highlights Huddersfield’s resilience. Jim Lenihan, Huddersfield’s head coach, spoke to Sky Sports about the win, saying, “It was nice to have a bit of belief at the back end of the game and find a way to win instead of lose.”
Lenihan also emphasized the hard work that had gone into training sessions and the importance of the victory. This is a very proud club that works hard behind the scenes, we want to walk round with some pride about ourselves.”
