While New York has set a target of adding 4 gigawatts of new nuclear power, no projects are currently under construction. Fragility in the system’s core

ConEd, the company in charge of New York City’s electric utility, reported that the system held up during a recent heatwave, though some brief power outages were reported. A company spokesperson stressed that most of the 3.7 million customers served by ConEd experienced no interruptions during the extreme weather. Still, the spokesperson acknowledged that the system is being pushed to its limits under the pressure of rising demand.

Curt Morgan of Alpha Generation, the firm that operates New York’s peaker plants, said the barges receive regular maintenance and updates each year. Morgan added that their sites could eventually be refitted with new technologies as part of the city’s future energy strategy. However, he did not address the pressing need to replace the aging facilities with more modern and sustainable solutions. “These facilities deliver the reliable, flexible energy that keeps the city running,” Morgan stated.

Ken Lovett, a senior communications advisor for New York Governor Kathy Hochul, stated that the state is pursuing a broad energy strategy that includes wind, solar, and nuclear options. Yet, given the slow progress of offshore wind projects and the underperformance of Quebec’s hydropower, coupled with the slow development of new nuclear power, this approach may not be enough to meet the demands of the future. “Our priority is keeping the lights on and energy affordable for everyone in New York,” Lovett said.
