The injury and initial prognosis
At Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Eli Drinkwitz confirmed Ahmad Hardy will not take the field during any full-contact drills in the first seven days of fall camp. The decision follows a May 10 incident outside Kamikazy Biker Club in Laurel, Mississippi, where Hardy was shot in the femur. The wound required surgery, and while the bone has healed, the return timeline remains in play.
During SEC Media Days in July, Drinkwitz offered a cautious optimism, saying Hardy had received clearance to begin football activities. The head coach added a 5-8 week window for a return-to-play process. That places Hardy’s earliest potential return to full participation around the start of the season, which opens Sept. 3.
Camp structure and possible return
Mizzou will hold six full practices during the first week of camp. Hardy is expected to attend and engage in some non-contact drills. The schedule leaves little margin for error in the return timeline. If the process moves faster, the running back could return in time for the opener. If it stretches closer to the 8-week mark, he may miss it.
The Tigers’ SEC opener at Mississippi State is Sept. 26. Drinkwitz said an update might be possible in two weeks, which would align with the midpoint of the current timeline. The coach has not ruled out a September debut, but the immediate plan is to keep Hardy on the sidelines for now.
The next step for the team
With six scheduled practices before the first full week, the Tigers have a chance to build chemistry among running backs. The coaching staff has not named a starter in the absence of Hardy, shifting attention to depth and versatility in the backfield. For now, the focus is on ensuring the star tailback is ready when he returns.
Drinkwitz said the rehab process is ongoing, and the team remains focused on a September return. The next update may come as early as late August, when the full scope of his progress becomes clearer.
