According to WBO president Gustavo Olivieri, Haney’s achievements could qualify him for the organization’s Super Champion designation.
What Super Champion Means
The Super Champion designation under WBO rules grants fighters more control over their schedules. It particularly helps when seeking high-profile bouts or title unification opportunities. While it does not remove the need for mandatory title defenses, it can provide flexibility. For example, it can extend defense deadlines. Olivieri confirmed that the process is open. However, it requires a formal request. “There’s a section in our rules, Section 14, titled Super Champion,” he said in an interview with Cigar Talk. “Haney, through his team, has to file a written petition. This petition must include all the relevant arguments per the rules. Then we will consider it.”
Olivieri stressed that Haney’s case seems strong. “He’s got the merits,” the WBO president said. “Undisputed champion, multi-division champion. His record speaks for itself.” These statements suggest that Haney’s accomplishments could be persuasive enough to convince the Championship Committee to grant the designation.
Although Team Haney has not yet submitted an official petition, Bill Haney, Devin’s brother, already reacted to the president’s comments. On X, he posted a clip from the interview. He added the caption, “The President has spoken.” If the Haney team decides to file a petition, the WBO Championship Committee will review it. They will make the final decision. However, Olivieri’s words signal that Haney’s background and track record are compelling enough. They warrant serious consideration.
