Para athlete Dilip Gavit, who captured attention with a gold medal in the 100m event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, has turned his focus to an even greater challenge. He aims to break world records in both the 100m and 400m races at the upcoming Para Asian Games in Japan. Gavit, who previously earned gold in the 400m at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, is now eyeing another milestone in the shorter sprint.
Gavit, competing in the T47 category for athletes with upper limb impairments, has set his sights on clocking 10.28 seconds in the 100m. That time is near India's able-bodied national record. During a recent felicitation ceremony held by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Gavit shared his goal. 'I want to set world records in the 100m and 400m at the Asian Games,' he said, expressing his ambition with clarity and determination.
From 400m to 100m
Although Gavit is primarily trained for the 400m, he described his 100m race in Glasgow as an enjoyable experience. 'I just had to sprint,' he said. Gavit added that the event wasn’t stressful for him. He has a background in able-bodied competitions, having won national golds and Khelo India titles. His 400m training, he feels, naturally supports his performance in the 100m.
He dedicated his recent 100m victory to his coach, Vaijanath Kale, whom he credits for much of his success. 'He always told me the only goal is to make India proud,' Gavit said, recalling his words before a crucial race. The timing of his gold medal on Guru Purnima made the victory feel especially meaningful.
Gavit explained that Kale, who began mentoring him in 2016, provided more than just physical training. 'He kept me at his home, treated me like a family member, and gave me everything I needed,' he said, speaking of the support and care that helped shape his career.
Preparations and Focus
Gavit has already completed sufficient rest and training during this period. He emphasized the need to prepare for upcoming competitions. There are more events coming, and I need to be ready for them,' he said. His coach will design the training plan, with the 400m being the primary event to focus on.
Gavit believes that his 400m training benefits his 100m performance as well. However, he clarified that the 400m remains his main focus. He is confident about the challenges ahead and feels ready to take on the Asian Games with determination.
Gavit is not just preparing to compete. He is aiming to set a new personal and national standard, with the potential to achieve two world records at once. His journey is one filled with ambition, respect for his mentor, and a love for the sport.
