A New Stake in British Luxury
Frasers Group, the retail giant helmed by Mike Ashley, has positioned itself to acquire a significant stake in Burberry. The group holds put options that would give it a 4.2% share in the British luxury brand, potentially valued at £171m at the current share price of 1,140p. This move is in line with Ashley’s strategy of acquiring key positions in fashion houses to exert influence.
The pursuit of Burberry is the latest in a string of luxury-focused expansions. Frasers began in sportswear through Sports Direct but has shifted toward high-end fashion in recent years, with a particular focus on building its Flannels brand. Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor, suggested that the Burberry stake could help Frasers ‘sharpen its image’ at a critical time.
Burberry’s Turnaround Efforts
Burberry, under CEO Joshua Schulman, has embarked on a drastic turnaround, including a pivot toward ‘timeless British luxury.’ The firm reported a 5% rise in revenue earlier this month, driven by stronger demand in China and the US. Schulman has also cut £100m in costs and streamlined operations over recent years.
The group launched an unsolicited £1.7bn bid for Hugo Boss last month, which the German brand called ‘inadequate.’ It also tried but failed to secure Mulberry in 2024, with two rejected bids totaling up to £111m.
Frasers has intensified its efforts with Hugo Boss, reportedly pushing for chief executive Michael Murray to take over the brand it may acquire. The group remains tight-lipped about its plans for Burberry and has not responded to requests for comment. For now, the stakes in the luxury game are rising — and Ashley’s group is not backing down.
