The essentials
  • Women make up the majority of athletes in the 2026 race.
  • The race offers a variety of distances to cater to all age groups and fitness levels.

Frankfurt's City-Triathlon is drawing larger numbers than ever before. Organizers anticipate over 3000 participants this year, which would mark a new all-time high for the sold-out race. Women now form the largest portion of the field, a shift that event leaders trace back to the influence of social media and the changes in recreational patterns during the pandemic. The sport, which combines swimming, cycling, and running, is gaining a broader appeal, especially among younger and female athletes.

The event was launched in 2010 and made an immediate impact, attracting over 1000 athletes in its inaugural year. Since then, the race has remained sold out every year. According to Annette Albers of Eventpower, the triathlon was designed as a more approachable option for those who prefer the Olympic-distance course rather than the longer and more physically demanding Ironman races. It caters to a wider audience by focusing on shorter distances and more manageable physical challenges.

With expected temperatures rising to over 30°C, organizers are taking measures to ensure the safety and comfort of all athletes. Albers explains that water coolers will be placed throughout the course, and two additional showers have been added along the running route to help with heat relief. The event has expanded its offerings to include a duathlon—combining swimming and cycling—for older participants who may prefer to avoid the strain of running on pavement. Participants can choose from three race options: Olympic distance, middle distance, and sprint. On race day, several roads in Frankfurt will be closed until 2 PM to facilitate the event.

The triathlon is structured to provide a place for everyone to get involved. Participants can compete for Hessian championships, join relay teams, or take part just for fun. Albers highlights that the triathlon has not generated the same level of rivalry among organizers as the marathon, which currently involves at least three competing groups vying for the right to host in the future. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a stable event planning process for all major races in the city.

Although the event does not have long-term contracts with the city, Albers notes that the current arrangement has ensured a consistent and predictable rhythm for large-scale competitions in Frankfurt. She cautions against proposed changes that might disrupt this stability. The current system has offered a level of security to both organizers and participants, allowing the event to grow while maintaining its core appeal. As the city and the sport continue to evolve, Albers remains focused on keeping the event accessible, safe, and organized.

“Das ist nichts, was wir nicht schon erlebt haben.”
