NI fighters set to battle for Commonwealth Games spots
A record five Northern Ireland boxers find themselves in a favorable position as the Commonwealth Games tournament progresses. Kaci Rock, Michaela Walsh, Jansseen Hill, Garyn McAllister and Willie John McCartan all have the opportunity to reach the podium with a single win in their respective quarter-final matches on 28 and 29 July.
Michaela Walsh, a three-time Commonwealth Games medalist and defending featherweight champion, is set to face off against Lara Brown of Scotland in the afternoon session on 29 July. Walsh has previously earned silver medals at the 2014 and 2018 editions of the Games, and is hoping to extend her impressive run in Glasgow.
Diverse matchups ahead for NI boxers
The upcoming quarter-final bouts feature a mix of international opponents. Garyn McAllister will take on Ghana’s Jibril Muntari on 28 July, while Kaci Rock faces Niue’s Karen Te Ruki Pasene on the same day. In the evening session of 29 July, Hill is set to challenge England’s Chantelle Reid, and McCartan will face Daniel Plange, also from Ghana.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Louis Rooney, the first Northern Ireland competitor to take to the ring, will face Mathealira Seholoholo of Lesotho in the bantamweight division on Friday. Nicole Clyde begins her bantamweight journey on Sunday against Nancy Bamfo of Ghana. JP Hale, Jude Gallagher, Eoghan Quinn, Caitlin Fryers and Jon McConnell will also compete in the last-16 stage through the coming days.
Tournament structure and key dates set for medal races
Quarter-final matches will be held on 28 and 29 July with the semi-finals scheduled for 31 July and the finals taking place on 1 August. With each bout carrying immense weight, the focus for the five NI boxers is firmly on making the final steps toward a Commonwealth Games podium finish.
