The specifics of Finland's disposal strategy

The proposed final disposal system in Finland is engineered to isolate high-level radioactive waste deep beneath the Earth’s surface for a very long duration. At the Olkiluoto site, spent nuclear fuel will first be sealed into durable canisters made of copper and iron at an above-ground encapsulation facility. These canisters will then be transported to a specially designed underground repository, located approximately 400 to 450 meters below ground in solid bedrock. To further enhance protection, each canister will be encased in bentonite clay before being placed in the underground storage area.

Although STUK has given its approval, Posiva must still clear an additional regulatory hurdle before operations can begin. This final confirmation will be carried out by STUK to ensure that all safety requirements are fully satisfied. If the government grants the operating license, it is expected to remain valid until the end of 2070, allowing for a long operational period. During the first ten years of the license, Posiva will be required to complete a thorough safety review and update its long-term safety analysis to reflect the actual conditions of the disposal system in use.
