Lettuce fields in the Nuremberg Knoblauchsland are facing an escalating challenge: extreme heat. In response, farmers like Stefan Hußnätter are adapting their routines, beginning the day at 4:30 a.m. to collect up to 50,000 lettuce heads daily. The shift is necessary to avoid the intense midday sun and to ensure the lettuce remains fresh and firm under challenging weather conditions.
To counter wilting, workers quickly transport the lettuce using conveyor belts to trucks. Hußnätter highlights the importance of washing and chilling the lettuce heads as a critical step to maintaining their quality. To further protect the crops, he waters the plants directly, aiming to prevent sunburn on the sensitive leaves. This technique becomes especially important during heatwaves when temperatures soar past 35 degrees Celsius. Hußnätter uses water drawn from the Regnitz River through shallow wells just eight meters deep, a method he explains uses water that would naturally flow past his fields.
In the Nuremberg Knoblauchsland, water use for agriculture is viewed as a reasonable and manageable resource, despite the region's growing heat challenges. Johannes Barth, a geology expert at the GeoZentrum Nordbayern in Erlangen, supports the practice of moderate water withdrawal from rivers, particularly when regulated by systems like the Franconian Lake District. These systems help maintain river levels, making it hydrologically sound to draw water from wells near the river. However, Barth cautions that in dry years, water levels must be closely monitored to avoid overuse, especially when it comes to natural bodies of water.
Hußnätter’s strategy for managing heat-induced challenges extends beyond timing. He ensures his 200 harvest workers are equipped with sunscreen, drinks, and hats for their early morning work. As temperatures rise and heatwaves become more frequent, Hußnätter describes the situation as a 'heat battle.' His efforts illustrate the broader changes in farming practices required to address extreme weather and maintain crop quality in a shifting climate.
The region’s agricultural practices, particularly for lettuce, are notably different from those for other crops like potatoes or grain. However, Barth and others stress the importance of monitoring water levels closely in dry years to avoid overdraw from natural water sources.
