The Atlanta Falcons have signed quarterback Cooper Rush to bolster their depth chart, which is thin due to injuries to Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix.

All 32 NFL teams are in camp, and Atlanta's move comes quickly as the preseason approaches. Tagovailoa and Penix are both expected to miss time in early training camp. That leaves only two of Atlanta's four quarterbacks currently healthy.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted Tagovailoa’s injury is not long-term, with the QB likely returning to full participation by next week. Penix, however, is recovering from a torn ACL and will need more time.

Rush, most recently with the Ravens in 2025, started two games for Baltimore in relief of Lamar Jackson but struggled. He brings a 9-7 career starting record and experience stepping in under pressure.

His best season came in 2022, filling in for Dak Prescott with the Cowboys. Dallas made the playoffs that year with a 12-5 record. Rush was key in managing the game and keeping the offense functional during Prescott’s absence.

Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is yet to decide whether he’ll play Tagovailoa in Atlanta’s first preseason game, scheduled for August 14. This gives Jack Strand and Rush a chance to earn reps and make an impression.

Until roster cutdown day, the Falcons are likely to carry four quarterbacks. With Tagovailoa’s injury history and Penix’s rehab timeline, it’s a cautious approach. But it also means limited playing time in the coming weeks.

“He is expected to return to full participation by next week.”
