Electric Cars in Germany Have Become More Affordable Since 2020
Electric car prices in Germany dropped by 18% from 2020 to 2025 after adjusting for inflation. This decline helped close the cost gap with vehicles powered by combustion engines. During the same period, prices for traditional cars rose slightly.
A recent study compared data from 2020 to 2025 to track price changes. The research looked at over 100,000 data points from the ADAC database. Researchers found that electric vehicles offer better performance and longer ranges today. This makes them a more attractive option compared to traditional vehicles.
Patrick Plötz, a professor at the Fraunhofer Institute, explained that comparing prices between electric and combustion cars is tricky. This is because more expensive electric cars are now available. To get a fair comparison, the study focused on similar models over time. This method avoided skewed averages.
Peter Mock from the International Council on Clean Transportation said the market for electric vehicles has matured a lot. However, he believes there is still room for prices to drop further. Lower battery costs and government regulations could push prices even lower in the future.
The study predicts that by 2030, electric cars in Europe may cost the same as traditional vehicles. At that point, the total cost to drive each kilometer could make EVs much more economical. Experience in other regions shows that EVs can reach about 50% market share when prices are equal.
Government purchase incentives have also boosted the popularity of electric cars. Between May 19 and June 30, more than 53.9 million euros were approved for these incentives. This is part of a larger program that offers up to 3 billion euros in subsidies.
Tesla received the most support, with 2,086 approved vehicles. Volkswagen came in second, with 2,720 approved vehicles across its brands like Audi, Cupra, and Porsche. Stellantis followed with 2,278 cars, including models from Citroen, Opel, and Jeep.
The German Federal Environment Ministry noted that it is too early to say how these subsidies will be distributed over time. The funding period is short. Also, the market is changing quickly as new models are introduced regularly.
The study authors stated that the use of list prices instead of actual transaction prices should not distort the findings. They argue that the available data on real transactions is limited. But this approach still offers a good picture of price trends.
The research shows that electric cars are becoming more competitive. They are cheaper, more powerful, and offer better range. With falling prices and government incentives, EVs could become the top choice for many consumers in the coming years.
Regulatory pressures and production efficiencies could further lower the prices of electric vehicles. As battery technology improves, these savings will likely benefit consumers. This could speed up the shift to electric transportation in Europe.
