Fernandez, the Canadian seventh seed, seemed in control at 5-1 in the second set, but Eala turned the match around, taking a 6-5 lead before forcing a tie-break. In the breaker, Eala built a commanding 3-0 lead and eventually clinched the set with a brilliant cross-court forehand that gave her the first match point.
Eala’s victory continues her meteoric rise this season.
