The essentials
  • The 9,000m drill program is fully funded and includes up to 6–8 diamond drill holes across two priority areas.
  • High-grade assays in 2025–2026 included 102 g/t gold and 23.1% copper at the Sunrise Target.

Domestic Metals Corp. (TSXV: DMCU) made a key announcement on August 6, 2026, outlining plans to start a fully permitted and funded drilling program at the Smart Creek Project in Montana. The initiative involves drilling up to 9,000 meters, with the aim of testing multiple high-priority targets identified during the 2025–2026 exploration phase. The effort will focus on zones showing potential for both porphyry copper deposits and copper-gold-silver enriched carbonate replacement deposits.

Smart Creek and the Butte District

Known as the Butte District, this area produced nearly 24.8 billion pounds of copper between 1180 and 20041. The Smart Creek Project, covering 8,000 hectares, is situated in a comparable geological environment. This alignment suggests the potential for similar high-grade mineralization patterns to those found in the Butte region.

The Smart Creek Project is being developed through a joint venture with Rio Tinto, which holds a 40% interest in the asset. Rio Tinto previously completed 26 out of 40 permitted drill holes on the site. One notable result was SMCR0022, which returned 109.73 meters grading 0.75% copper, including a 89-meter interval at 0.97% copper. This hole was highlighted in a news release from August 20, 2024.

Recent Exploration Results

Since Domestic Metals took over the Smart Creek Project in August 2024, the company has been conducting a comprehensive exploration strategy. In the 2025 summer field program, high-grade samples were collected at the Sunrise Target. Notably, one sample contained 102 grams per ton gold, 23.1% copper, and 3,810 grams per ton silver. Earlier, in March 2025, the same area produced a result of 4.26 grams per ton gold.

In 2026, an IP (induced polarization) geophysical survey was carried out, identifying multiple new large-scale targets on the property. The chargeability features identified in the survey were found to align closely with known alteration footprints and previous high-grade sampling areas. These findings have been integrated into the company’s geological models and are now designated as top priority drill areas.

Drill Program Details

The 2026 drilling program will focus on two primary areas. The Smart Creek Target, or Phase 1, includes three diamond drill holes, each planned for 600 to 800 meters in depth. These holes are expected to take around 45 days to complete. The area's chargeability feature extends further west than previously identified, suggesting the possibility of porphyry copper mineralization.

The second phase, the Sunrise Mine Target, will include four diamond drill holes, also ranging from 600 to 800 meters. The IP survey revealed a chargeable area both to the north and south of the Sunrise Mine. The southern anomaly, which aligns with the Radio Tower target, is a key focus. This zone is estimated to take approximately 60 days to drill and may uncover porphyry or skarn mineralization. Assay results are anticipated about 6 to 8 weeks after the drilling begins. Further updates will be provided once the program is underway.

To support the drilling efforts and align incentives with company progress, Domestic Metals has issued 2,150,000 stock options to directors, officers, and consultants. The options are valid until August 2031 and can be exercised at a price of $0.19 per share. All technical and geological information in the announcement has been reviewed and approved by Daniel MacNeil, a professional geologist.

The drilling program marks a significant milestone in the company’s strategy at Smart Creek. As Gordon Neal, CEO and Director of Domestic Metals, noted, the project benefits from two years of rigorous exploration. The company's geological models have evolved substantially, helping to better target areas of interest. This approach combines historical data with the latest sampling and geophysical findings to refine exploration efforts. The results are expected to provide important insights into the project's mineral potential.

The Smart Creek Project has drawn attention not only for its mineral potential but also for its strategic location. The site’s geological similarities to the Butte District and the presence of high-grade samples from previous drilling efforts make it a promising area for further exploration. With Rio Tinto’s continued involvement, Domestic Metals is in a strong position to advance the project through this new drilling initiative.

The integration of geophysical data with surface sampling results has allowed the company to develop a detailed model of the Smart Creek system. By focusing on both porphyry and CRD (carbonate replacement deposits) targets, Domestic Metals aims to unlock the full value of the project. The upcoming drilling is expected to deliver critical information that could guide future exploration and development decisions.

The 2026 drilling campaign reflects a comprehensive strategy that leverages past work, current data, and future planning. As drilling progresses, the company will continue to evaluate the results and adjust its approach as needed. The Smart Creek Project remains a cornerstone of Domestic Metals' exploration efforts in the U.S., with the potential to generate meaningful discoveries and add value for stakeholders.
