Curium, based in Boston, has resumed the U.S. supply of Thallous Chloride TI 201 Injection, commonly known as thallium 201. After manufacturing ceased in 2022, the radiopharmaceutical is now back in active production and distribution for nuclear cardiology imaging. The reintroduction addresses a critical need for cardiac diagnostic tools, especially in scenarios where other options are limited or unavailable.
The isotope thallium 201 is primarily used in myocardial perfusion imaging to assess blood flow to the heart muscle. It acts as an alternative when PET scans or MRI technology are not accessible, not feasible, or unsuitable for certain patient situations. The radiopharmaceutical is especially valuable in viability testing, helping doctors determine if damaged heart tissue can recover, which is crucial for guiding treatment decisions in specific clinical cases.
Why this matters to doctors and patients
The decision to reintroduce thallium 201 followed extensive discussions with professionals in the nuclear cardiology community. They identified clinical situations where thallium 201 is uniquely helpful and should remain in the diagnostic toolset. Mike Patterson, CEO of Curium North America, explained, “When clinicians express they are facing a real gap in care, our job is to help close it.” He emphasized that this return involved substantial investments in cyclotron upgrades, staffing, and enhanced quality control systems to ensure a reliable, long-term U.S. supply.
Dr. Andrew J. Einstein, a nuclear cardiology expert and director of nuclear cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, highlighted the importance of the return of thallium 201. He noted that it offers a broader imaging option in settings where PET or MRI cannot be used, providing clinicians with an alternative stress-testing method when required. This is particularly important in cases involving patients with complex medical conditions or facilities with limited access to advanced imaging technologies.
The logistics of bringing it back
Production for thallium 201 has been launched at Curium's facility in Maryland Heights, Missouri. To support the reintroduction, the company made investments in cyclotron upgrades, training for staff, and expanded quality control infrastructure. According to Curium, this effort goes beyond simply restarting production—it represents a comprehensive commitment to building a robust, long-term U.S. supply of thallium 201. The company has ensured that the product is immediately available for use, fulfilling a pressing need in the medical community.
Mike Patterson added that the return of thallium 201 would help ensure that vulnerable patient populations have access to a key diagnostic tool. The process required not only manufacturing readiness but also the expansion of infrastructure and quality resources to meet long-term healthcare demands. This reintroduction is seen as a strategic move to support diagnostic flexibility for clinicians, particularly in areas with limited access to alternatives such as PET scans or MRI systems.
