Cleburne volleyball is once again starting from the beginning. For the 2026 season, the Lady Jackets are led by their third head coach in four years, Alex Oppenborn. The program returned to the playoffs in 2025 after a four-year absence, but the recent coaching change has created a mix of uncertainty and hope.
A new system under Oppenborn
Oppenborn’s arrival has brought a complete overhaul of the Lady Jackets’ approach. Alongside assistants Stacy Stayton, Amber Hooks, and Breanna Eaton, she is introducing a fresh system that the team is learning to navigate. Setter Haley Price and defensive specialist Madeline Morrison believe the change has been positive so far. 'It's been the best experience having her here,' Morrison said.
From the start, Oppenborn made it clear she is focused on long-term success. I want to build a program, I want them to grow,' she explained. This commitment came in response to the unexpected departure of Timmi Blackshear, the coach who guided the team in 2025.
New leaders in the spotlight
With key leaders like Arissa Turner and Grace Thorne no longer on the roster, Price and Morrison are stepping into greater roles. Oppenborn has recognized Price’s natural leadership and Morrison’s consistent effort during games. 'I played with her since my sophomore year, and I waited until my senior year to be like them.'
The Lady Jackets are still working to address challenges like a lack of height and strong hitting options. Younger players are also being integrated, and their volleyball IQ needs to improve. Price admitted the team has questions to answer but pointed to their growing unity as a strength. 'I think the team is closer than in past years,' she said.
Looking ahead in 2026
Cleburne is competing in a newly realigned District 8-5A, now featuring Mansfield Legacy instead of Everman. Oppenborn believes the district is more balanced now, and she is optimistic about the team’s potential. After coaching at Lake Worth, where her team faced some of the state’s best, she’s ready for the challenge.
The Lady Jackets aim to secure a second consecutive playoff berth. But Oppenborn’s vision goes beyond a single season.
To support this long-term goal, the coaching staff is placing emphasis on aggressive serves, aiming for a speed of 36-38 miles per hour. They are also refining blocking strategies and relying on strong defense as a foundation for success. Oppenborn acknowledges the difficulties ahead, noting that August will be particularly challenging with a heavy schedule. 'It's going to be rough, but we're prepared,' she said.
Morrison echoed this mindset, saying she isn't worried about the challenges because the Lady Jackets have faced tough situations before. Last season, under Blackshear’s leadership, the team found its rhythm by September. Oppenborn, who values hard work and adaptability, has already encouraged her players to push past early struggles and focus on growth.
Price and Morrison are stepping up as leaders in the absence of experienced seniors. Oppenborn sees Price as a model of leadership and Morrison as a player who consistently gives her all on the court. The coaching staff is confident in their potential to lead the Lady Jackets into a new era.
Despite the many unknowns, the team is moving forward with a shared sense of purpose. Oppenborn’s vision and determination, combined with the effort of her players, give the Lady Jackets hope for continued improvement and success in the coming years.
