The essentials
  • Chavarria has agreed personal terms with Chelsea.
  • Rayo Vallecano and Chelsea are finalizing the transfer details.
  • The deal is expected to cost less than Chavarria's €50m release clause.

A New Left-Back for Xabi Alonso

Chelsea are close to finalizing a transfer for Pep Chavarria, the Spanish defender currently playing for Rayo Vallecano. Negotiations have progressed significantly, with the 28-year-old having already reached personal terms with the club. The main task remaining is for Rayo and Chelsea to lock down the final financial details. Once these are settled, Chavarria will complete his medical and officially become part of Xabi Alonso’s defensive lineup.

Chavarria joined Rayo from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and quickly became a key player. Over the past few years, Chavarria has made over 120 appearances for Rayo, establishing himself as a dependable and consistent performer.

Chelsea needed to bolster their left-back position after Marc Cucurella was signed by Real Madrid. The transfer left Jorrel Hato as the only experienced left-back on the roster. Young academy player Landon Emenalo has taken the role in pre-season, but the club clearly sees Chavarria as the ideal long-term solution. His arrival will provide immediate depth and experience to the backline.

Xabi Alonso and his coaching staff are confident that Chavarria will be a solid addition to the team's system. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively aligns with the manager’s tactical approach. Despite having a contract with Rayo until 2030 and a reported €50 million release clause, Chelsea are confident of finalizing the deal for a lower price. The Spanish club is in direct talks, and the deal is expected to conclude soon.

The Bigger Transfer Picture

Chelsea have been busy this transfer window. Earlier in the summer, the club also acquired Marco Palestra, Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix, and Jordan Henderson, in addition to Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev, and Emmanuel Emegha. These signings are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the squad across multiple positions. With pre-season matches nearing their end, the club is eager to announce Chavarria’s arrival before the new season kicks off.

Chavarria will not only compete with Jorrel Hato and Landon Emenalo but also play a mentorship role. His wealth of experience should be valuable in developing younger defenders. The addition of Chavarria is another step in Alonso’s effort to build a competitive and sustainable team at Stamford Bridge.

Chavarria is expected to be given permission to travel to London to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract in the English capital. The Blues are also expected to be very active when it comes to offloading players in the final few weeks of the window.

Chelsea have been pursuing the 28-year-old left-back for the last month or so, with football.london reporting the west Londoners' interest for the first time back on June 29. Xabi Alonso is understood to have driven this move after being impressed with the Rayo defender last season. The Blues had a shortlist of left-back options and did consider others, especially when negotiations with Rayo were proving complicated at times, but Chavarria has always been Chelsea's No.1 target in his position.

While Stamford Bridge insiders have said not to rule anything out if an opportunity presents itself, the vast majority of Chelsea's incoming business has now been done in the summer transfer window.

Chavarria looks set to be another option for Xabi Alonso, who is understood to have driven this move after being impressed with the Rayo defender last season. The Spaniard has already agreed personal terms over a move to Stamford Bridge and is now awaiting the green light via a club-to-club agreement. While that has not quite been reached yet, sources say a deal is getting closer.

The next card

Chavarria is expected to arrive soon. His medical and paperwork should finish quickly. He’ll then join the squad ahead of pre-season games.
