Medal milestone
Chad le Clos added a bronze in the men's 4x100m medley relay at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This gave him 21 medals overall. It broke the record for the most decorated athlete in the event's history. The achievement eclipsed Australia's Emma McKeon. She previously held the lead in total medals. The 34-year-old South African swimmer collected three medals at the Games. These included silvers in two relay events.
Tragedy follows triumph
Just days after the podium finish, Le Clos posted on Instagram. His home in Sea Point, Cape Town, had been destroyed in a fire. The fire spread rapidly through his apartment block. The fire took the life of one of his longtime neighbors. A 93-year-old resident was killed. The fire left nothing in his home salvageable.
Le Clos expressed deep sadness over the loss in a heartfelt message. 'It has taken me a while to process this heartbreaking tragedy,' he wrote. He added, 'On the evening of 30 July, amid breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block. Which quickly spread to my home.'
A community responds
Le Clos paid tribute to the neighbor who died, offering his condolences to the family and friends left behind. 'No words can truly ease a loss like this,' he said, while calling on the community to support those affected. He also announced a fundraising campaign to aid his neighbors who lost their homes and possessions.
The fire left the 34-year-old swimmer in a state of shock after just celebrating a career milestone. Le Clos is best known for defeating Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics. He has earned four Olympic medals, 16 world titles, and seven Commonwealth golds during his career.
