The essentials
  • O'Riley has not played consistently at Brighton since joining in August 2024.
  • A loan to Marseille saw O'Riley contribute two goals and five assists.
  • Celtic has a 10% sell-on clause if Brighton profit from reselling the player.
  • O'Riley says he's open to new opportunities, especially in sunny locations.

Matt O'Riley has made it clear he’s open to a fresh start. The Celtic graduate has found his time at Brighton challenging, playing just four times under manager Fabian Hurzeler after returning from his Marseille loan in January.

O'Riley’s 2024 £25m transfer from Celtic included a 10% sell-on clause. That could benefit the Scottish side if Brighton move him. The midfielder’s loan spell in France brought two goals and five assists in Ligue 1.

O'Riley told The Argus he’s looking for a new challenge. He joked about preferring sunnier climates. 'Vitamin D is a good friend of mine,' he said. He also praised the global support of both Celtic and Marseille fans.

He said playing for both clubs has been a rare privilege. 'Not many people get to wear two big jerseys like that,' he added. Whether a move happens or not, O'Riley’s comments signal he’s ready for something new.
