Agent-linked flight leads to suspension

Tennessee's Arion Carter is now sidelined for the first two games of the season after being penalized by the NCAA. The linebacker accepted a $427.48 flight from an agent during the NFL pre-draft period, a move coach Josh Heupel confirmed led to the two-game suspension. Carter later withdrew from the draft due to a toe injury, repaid the money, and ended contact with the agent.

Carter's injury led to draft withdrawal

Carter's injury issues forced him to pull out of the draft. He had reported for pre-draft training on Jan. 5 but quickly experienced pain and swelling. After multiple treatments and an MRI, he decided to have surgery. The injury limited him last year, with Carter playing at around 65-70 percent capacity in the season. He had also missed three games because of the toe issue.

NCAA enforcement remains strict on rules

The NCAA said in a statement that its rules are clear: student-athletes cannot sign with agents to pursue NFL Draft opportunities. The school admitted the violation, and Carter was suspended after Tennessee appealed for leniency. The reduced penalty reflects the circumstances but still marks a significant hit to Tennessee’s defense as they bring in a new coordinator.

Carter, a two-year starter and All-SEC third team selection, has publicly supported his decision to return to the team. He said it was a "pivotal point" and that he made the "greatest decision" for his future. He will be sidelined for the season opener against Furman and the following game at Georgia Tech.

“Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being.”
