Brewers recall Thomas Pannone for series finale against Giants

2.1.2019, Pannone gave up two homers in two innings against the Giants. Now, four years later, he's back to face them again — this time as a Brewer.
By
The essentials
  • Pannone has a 3.54 ERA in 16 appearances this season with the Nashville Sounds.
  • Logan Webb enters the game with a 7.54 ERA in July.

A return after a long detour

Thomas Pannone has not pitched in the Major Leagues since June 2023, when he made an appearance in Pittsburgh. After 2.2 innings, he was designated for assignment and subsequently released. Over the next 10 months, Pannone navigated through the Korean Baseball Association, as well as the Minor League systems of the Tigers and the Cubs before arriving in Triple-A Nashville. Now, he has been called up to Milwaukee for his second Major League start since 2023.

This decision aligns with manager Pat Murphy’s strategy to give some of his younger pitchers a rest before an upcoming off day. The Milwaukee Brewers are entering the heart of the season, and with a day off coming soon, a move involving Pannone makes strategic sense.

Giants' Logan Webb not on his A-game

Logan Webb has generally been effective this season, recording a .231 batting average against and limiting walks to just 29 over 112 innings. However, his performance has declined this month. In July, Webb has struggled, posting a 7.54 ERA over 22.2 innings. He has also struggled to strike out batters, managing only 13 strikeouts during that span.

For the Milwaukee Brewers, who are aiming to extend a four-game series-winning streak since the All-Star break, this could be a golden opportunity. The team is seeking to capitalize on Webb's recent form, particularly after a strong performance in their previous game.

Lineup tweaks ahead of another crucial series

Manager Pat Murphy has chosen a lineup similar to the one used in the previous day’s 8-2 victory, with only minor adjustments. Jake Bauers will start at first base, while Gary Sánchez will take over behind the plate. Christian Yelich remains in the cleanup position, and Brice Turang continues to showcase his strong hitting form.

The Giants are aiming to win two consecutive series for the first time since the beginning of June, when they achieved the feat against the Brewers and the Cubs. However, they will need to perform significantly better than in their last encounter with Milwaukee to make that happen. First pitch is scheduled for 2:45 p.m., and the game will be available on Brewers.TV and WTMJ 620.

The box score

3.54 — Pannone's ERA with Nashville this season. 7.54 — Webb's July ERA. 2 — Homeruns Pannone gave up in his last MLB start against the Giants.
