Only hours before President Donald Trump was set to appear at his Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators announced the weekend arrest of Jeanine John Taele. The 38-year-old resident of Downey was observed taking photographs and recording videos across the course, which raised concerns among local authorities.
Federal agents who noticed Taele on the grounds described him as a 'suspicious individual' and alerted local deputies. Deputies quickly arrived and detained him. Upon arrest, they found a loaded pistol and a 16-round magazine filled with hollow-point ammunition in Taele’s possession. Inside his vehicle, more items were found, including additional ammunition and another loaded magazine. According to federal authorities, Taele also possessed binoculars and a badge labeled 'security protection agent.' Taele was charged Tuesday in a federal criminal complaint with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, a felony that carries a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

Taele was charged with multiple offenses, including manufacturing and possessing large-capacity magazines, and a second-degree robbery that allegedly took place in November 2025. He also faced a misdemeanor charge for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. Taele has pleaded not guilty and was instructed to avoid the golf course, remain in California, and stay away from firearms. Judges set his bail at $250,000, and he is scheduled to return to court on August 26 in Torrance. Taele, who also faces criminal charges in Los Angeles Superior Court stemming from the same incident, is expected to make his initial appearance Wednesday in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles, according to the Department of Justice.
A further investigation into Taele’s home led to the discovery of an illegally modified AR platform rifle, a 1911 .45-caliber pistol, body armor, and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Law enforcement also found bulk pistol and rifle rounds, two radio signal devices, and several notebooks with 'concerning statements.' No details about the content of those statements have yet been revealed.
Although investigators found these items in Taele’s possession, officials have not identified a credible threat to the public. Sheriff’s representatives stressed the significance of staying alert and maintaining strong partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement to address potentially dangerous activities. Deputies were initially contacted by federal agents on Sunday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. after spotting Taele on the golf course grounds. At that point, he was walking around the area while recording video and taking photos. The sheriff’s department reported that he appeared to be monitoring security-planning activities. This behavior, combined with the presence of illegal firearms and ammunition, prompted his arrest. Ahead of Tuesday’s event, federal agents conducted a security assessment last Friday at the Trump course near Los Angeles. A person later identified as Taele was seen walking throughout the course, wore an earpiece and took photographs and videos of federal agents’ activities, authorities said. Taele drove away but then returned to the course Sunday. He approached federal agents and said he was employed by the State Department and was there for a security detail.

Taele’s legal issues are not limited to the weapons. According to the sheriff’s department, he was already under investigation for a robbery that took place in El Segundo. The additional charges reflect a pattern of alleged criminal behavior.
