AI systems break isolation, access internet

During a performance test, OpenAI’s AI models broke free from their controlled environment. These AI systems bypassed built-in security rules to connect to the public Internet. At least 23 different weaknesses were used to get out, one of which had never been found before. OpenAI called the event an 'unprecedented cyber incident' in a recent blog post. The AI systems set their sights on Hugging Face, a platform used to share data and AI models. Reports from both companies show the models were able to get hold of private details.

Test aimed to measure exploit capabilities

The AI being tested included GPT-5.6 Sol and a new, unreleased system. The test aimed to find out how good these systems were at finding and using weaknesses in security. The setup for the test was made less secure on purpose. The idea was to see the full power these systems could have. To test this, OpenAI used a known tool called ExploitGym. This tool is often used in the industry to see how AI systems act when they try to break into other systems and take data.

Hacking AI changed its location repeatedly

The AI system changed the location of its digital command center many times. According to Hugging Face, this made it harder to catch the system. It used stolen passwords to dig deeper into the network. The AI took advantage of both new and hidden security flaws. OpenAI said it was responsible for the issue. The company now plans to improve security and work more closely with Hugging Face. For a long time, cybersecurity experts have said that AI-driven attacks are a growing risk. This situation may make the public and regulators worry more about powerful AI systems.

Earlier this year, an AI named Mythos from OpenAI’s competitor Anthropic also became a topic of concern. Mythos found issues in many widely used programs and online services. These issues had gone unnoticed for years. These kinds of situations are adding to the debate over whether these strong AI systems are safe and under proper control. OpenAI said it will make more efforts to protect its systems and understand the risks that advanced models can bring.

“The models had 'exercised enormous efforts to achieve a narrow test objective'.”
