NioBay Metals Inc., based in Montréal, has announced the outcomes of its recent purification efforts, which achieved remarkable levels of purity for both niobium and tantalum oxides. The niobium oxide (Nb₂O₅) reached approximately 99.6% purity, while the tantalum oxide (Ta₂O₅) achieved an impressive 99.98%. These results come after successful phases of metallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, as detailed in their earlier press release on April 8.
The calcination process, conducted at temperatures reaching up to 1050 °C, played a crucial role in these outcomes. The purification phase was executed at SGS Canada Inc., an independent and specialized firm located in Quebec City. The earlier processing stages, including leaching, precipitation tests, and initial calcination, were carried out at SGS facilities in Lakefield, Ontario. These results are a testament to the effectiveness of the methods employed and the high quality of the materials obtained.
Jean-Sébastien David, President and CEO of NioBay, expressed his enthusiasm for the results, stating they align with the specifications of potential customers. He emphasized that this milestone is significant in advancing the Crevier niobium and tantalum project. With positive technical and economic assessments already underway, the project could potentially focus solely on the production of niobium oxide for the battery and superalloy manufacturing industries.
NioBay's Commitments and Projects
NioBay Metals is dedicated to becoming a leader in the mining sector with a strong focus on minimizing environmental impact through low carbon consumption and responsible management of water and wildlife. Their commitment to sustainability is closely tied to the inclusion and consent of Indigenous communities in the areas where their projects are situated. NioBay operates with full respect for the communities on whose ancestral lands their work is conducted.
The company holds a 100% interest in the James Bay Niobium Project, located in Ontario, 45 km south of Moosonee within the Moose Cree Traditional Territory. In addition, NioBay owns an 80.18% interest in the Crevier niobium and tantalum project, with the remaining 19.82% held by Niobec Inc., a division of Magris Performance Materials Inc. The Crevier Project is approximately 50 km north of Girardville and 150 km from the Niobec mine, situated within the Nitassinan, or ancestral territory, of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh First Nation, whose main population center is Mashteuiatsh.
Element Uses
Niobium, a naturally occurring element, is known for its ductility, malleability, and resistance to corrosion. It plays a vital role in enhancing the properties of materials used in the Mobility, Structural, and Energy sectors. When added to steel, glass, and aluminum castings, niobium improves their efficiency and reduces environmental impact while increasing their overall value.
Tantalum has diverse applications, particularly in the production of electronic components. Its unique property of not causing an immune response in mammals makes it ideal for surgical implants, such as skull plates. Tantalum is also used in medical applications like connecting torn nerves with foil or wire and binding abdominal muscles with woven gauze. Beyond medical uses, tantalum alloys are extremely strong and are employed in various high-performance applications, including turbine blades, rocket nozzles, and internal combustion engines.
As both President and CEO of NioBay, his oversight ensures the accuracy and reliability of the findings presented.
NioBay Metals continues to emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and good governance. Their operations are guided by the principle of inclusion, ensuring that Indigenous communities are integral partners in the development and execution of their projects. This approach not only respects the heritage and rights of the communities but also supports the long-term sustainability and success of NioBay’s initiatives.
The company remains committed to transparency and responsibility in all its activities, ensuring that all forward-looking statements in the press release are clearly indicated. These statements are based on current information and expectations, with no assurance that actual results will align with these projections. NioBay is focused on delivering long-term value while maintaining its dedication to ethical practices and community engagement.
