The Auguste Clown Tradition
As an auguste clown, Rolston embraces the role of silly troublemaker. Her comedic style relies on puns and everyday surprises. When asked for her birthdate, she replies, 'Didn’t you get one when you were born?' Rolston's approach to clowning involves making mistakes on purpose and creating unexpected moments in conversation to bring laughter to her audience. She believes this style allows her to connect with people in a unique and joyful way.
President Nixon declared August 1-7 National Clown Week in 1971 to spotlight their charitable work. The initiative was created to call public attention to the charitable activities of clowns and the wholesome entertainment they provide for all. This national designation has now filtered down to the local level, with Temple Mayor Tim Davis recognizing the importance of clowns by adding an official proclamation for International Clown Week in the city. Davis' proclamation states, 'Laughter has long been recognized as a universal language that brings people together, lifts spirits and reminds us of the importance of kindness, compassion and joy.'
The clown duo makes deliveries mostly on Monday, with Rolston saying, 'My celebration is seeing other people happy to get the stuff.' Rolston, who goes by the clown name Buttons, has been clowning around for decades and sees her work as a public service rather than for profit. Her assistant David Farhie, as Zipper, supports the deliveries, helping to ensure that the joy and fun reach as many people as possible. Farhie explained, 'The main reason why I’m doing this on Monday is because I want to experience her joy and her wonder in giving these things and the reaction that she gets from people.' Rolston and Farhie aim to bring some much-needed fun and laughter to a world filled with challenges.
