DOE’s Vision for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses The Innovation Campus initiative builds on the Administration's broader effort to rebuild the U.S. nuclear industrial base. Following the May 2025 nuclear executive orders, DOE launched initiatives to accelerate advanced reactor deployment, strengthen the U.S.-based fuel cycle, expand manufacturing capacity, and restore U.S. leadership across the nuclear enterprise.

The January 2026 Request for Information (RFI) on Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses expanded that strategy beyond individual reactor projects by asking states to propose integrated regional nuclear ecosystems capable of supporting multiple stages of the nuclear lifecycle.

The RFI reflects DOE's broader objective of leveraging state leadership, private investment, and targeted federal support to develop self-sustaining regional nuclear ecosystems. Although DOE encouraged each state to tailor its proposal to regional strengths and priorities, the RFI envisions Innovation Campuses supporting activities across the full nuclear lifecycle, including: - Fuel cycle infrastructure – uranium conversion, enrichment, deconversion, fuel fabrication, and advanced fuel manufacturing; - Advanced reactor deployment – reactor demonstrations, commercial deployment, and power generation; - Used fuel management – reprocessing, recycling, waste management, and disposition; - Advanced manufacturing and supporting industries – component manufacturing, transportation infrastructure, and supply chain development; - Workforce development – education, training, and skilled labor development; - Supporting infrastructure – including advanced manufacturing, energy-intensive industries, and potentially co-located data centers, depending on the state's proposal.

By encouraging states to develop proposals around their unique strengths, DOE recognizes that no two Innovation Campuses are likely to look the same. Some may emphasize fuel cycle capabilities, while others may focus on advanced reactor deployment, manufacturing, isotope production, or AI infrastructure. But each campus will advance a common objective: creating integrated regional nuclear ecosystems that support the full nuclear lifecycle while strengthening the long-term competitiveness of the U.S. nuclear industry.
