Aiyuk's NFL Status in Question
Brandon Aiyuk's possible return to the NFL has stirred confusion and speculation as he continues to clash publicly with the San Francisco 49ers. A recent statement from 49ers insider Grant Cohn casts doubt on Aiyuk’s intentions to return to football. Cohn pointed out the lack of action from Aiyuk, noting he has not taken any steps to officially reenter the league. 'You have to assume he doesn’t want to play football anymore,' Cohn said, emphasizing the importance of hiring an agent and filing for reinstatement, actions Aiyuk has not taken yet.
The team has been clear on Aiyuk’s current standing. General Manager John Lynch addressed the matter during a press conference, explaining that Aiyuk is on the 'left squad' list. I’m personally focused on the players that are here with us.' His remarks reflected the team’s decision to move past the issue and concentrate on the current roster.
During that year, he recorded 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns on 75 receptions, earning recognition as one of the top wide receivers in the league. However, the situation took a negative turn in the 2024 season when he suffered a torn ACL and MCL after playing just seven games. Recovery in the NFL typically demands consistent communication and cooperation with the team's medical staff, a standard Aiyuk failed to meet.
Sources reported that Aiyuk stopped showing up for scheduled rehabilitation sessions and neglected to maintain contact with the 49ers’ medical team. As a result, the 49ers voided the remaining guaranteed money in his contract and placed him on the reserve/left squad list. This move effectively removed him from the active roster while maintaining his contractual obligations.
Players on the reserve/left squad are unable to be active for the season unless they take the necessary steps to be reinstated. Aiyuk has not filed for reinstatement, and Lynch made it clear the 49ers have no interest in discussing the issue further. 'I don’t have anything to say on that,' Lynch said, reaffirming the team’s stance to move forward without Aiyuk.
A Deadlock with No Easy Way Out
Even though Aiyuk is still under contract, the situation has reached an impasse with no apparent resolution. Lynch reemphasized the 49ers’ position when asked about the issue. 'We wish him well. We wish his family well,' he said, but no gestures of reconciliation or compromise were mentioned.
Aiyuk, meanwhile, has shown no signs of wanting to mend the situation with the 49ers. He has taken to social media to express his frustration and announced he no longer wants any future relationship with the team. This public fallout has painted a clear picture of a deep rift.
