Discount period
Canadians visiting New York City can enjoy a 30 per cent discount from Aug. 18 to Sept. 7 at more than 85 local businesses. The city branded this initiative as the Northern Neighbour Deal, a summer travel incentive aimed at Canadian tourists. To take advantage, travelers must book their reservations starting Aug. 4. New York officials designed the deal to help offset the effects of a weaker Canadian dollar, making the city more affordable for visitors from its northern neighbor.
Economic impact
Statistics Canada reported a drop in Canadian spending in the U.S. of $3.3 billion in 2025, reflecting a decline in cross-border tourism. New York City remains the second-largest source of international visitors from Canada, with over 800,000 expected to travel to the city this year. Mayor Zohran Mamdani highlighted that Canadian tourists contributed $1 billion to New York City's economy in 2024 alone. The city is now working to regain this market and return to pre-pandemic visitation levels by offering special deals and incentives.
Airline and partners
Toronto-based Porter Airlines is offering up to 20 per cent off all flights to New York for travel up to Dec. 15. Passengers must book by Aug. 7 to access the deal. With as many as 91 weekly flights serving LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, Porter plays a key role in supporting the Northern Neighbour Deal. The offer includes a wide range of New York City experiences, such as hotel stays, Broadway shows, dining, and museum visits. Participating hotels feature names like Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Sofitel New York, while attractions include the Intrepid Museum and New York Hall of Science. On Broadway, popular shows like The Book of Mormon and Stranger Things: The First Shadow are part of the deal.
The city and Porter are using the Northern Neighbour Deal to strengthen the connection between Canada and New York City. The initiative highlights the city's diverse offerings, from iconic landmarks to world-class entertainment, with the goal of showcasing what makes New York unique.
