Eleven races into the 2026 F1 season, the numbers paint a clear picture: long-held assumptions about race strategy are no longer reliable. The undercut, a move in which a driver pits earlier than their opponent to gain track position, has worked 86 percent of the time in close pit-stop battles, a sharp increase from the 68.7 percent success rate seen in the 2022–2025 period. This means that teams opting for the earlier pit stop are now more likely to secure an advantage than the ones holding off.

The one-stop strategy, once a rare option, has become more common, with 79 driver races completed on a single pit stop at seven different circuits. Suzuka saw the most of these at 18, while Miami had 16. This shift isn't just a one-off trend—it reflects a growing confidence in tyre longevity and in the ability to stretch out stints without compromising speed.

What was once a predictable hierarchy of tyre performance is now in question. Across five of the eleven circuits measured so far, the hard compound has degraded faster than the medium. This includes key tracks like Melbourne, Spa, Miami, Silverstone, and Montreal. At Melbourne, the difference was most extreme, with the hard losing 0.067 seconds per lap while the medium remained stable. The old rulebook—softer tyres faster but shorter, harder tyres slower but longer—is being rewritten, one lap at a time.

Monaco, however, has remained a stronghold of traditional strategy. Esteban Ocon ran 47 laps on hard tyres, Arvid Lindblad 53 on mediums, and Fernando Alonso 53 on softs. The soft compound, which is usually the shortest-lasting, performed unexpectedly well in the tight, twisty streets of the Principality, breaking the pattern set at other circuits.

Max Verstappen’s race in Hungary further defied expectations. His 29-lap stint on soft tyres showed just 0.038 seconds of degradation per lap across 19 clean laps—about half the average degradation rate for the hard tyres this season. This underlines how inconsistent the data has become, even across cars of the same make and model, depending on the circuit and strategy chosen.

Exceptions and Outliers

Barcelona has emerged as the clear outlier, where degradation levels are far worse than elsewhere. The track's soft tyres lost 0.247 seconds per lap, nearly double the historical average. Whether it's the track surface, ambient temperatures, or layout, the factors at play there seem to affect all teams equally, making it the only circuit where 2026 degradation is notably worse than in previous years.

Two circuits, on the other hand, showed almost no degradation at all. The Melbourne medium and Montreal soft tyres nearly flatlined in terms of performance loss per lap. Though their measured slopes were slightly negative, this simply means the loss was too small to distinguish from zero. These results, while unusual, aren't cause for concern—they don’t indicate a trend but rather a rare convergence of conditions.

Undercut Success and the Methodology Behind It

The 2026 season has seen 43 undercut victories out of 50 close-combat pit-stop battles, a stark 17-point increase over the 2022–2025 average of 68.7 percent. While 50 data points are too small to declare a long-term shift, the current success rate is significantly higher than any full season in F1 history. This could signal the start of a new strategy era.

Hungary offered a textbook example of the undercut's effectiveness. In seven battles, five went to the driver who pitted first, exactly in line with the historical 75 percent baseline. Larger samples from Barcelona and Austria also reinforced the trend, with Barcelona’s 19 battles and Austria’s 12 both favoring the undercut above the expected average. These results support the idea that the undercut is gaining ground across the board.

The pit lane, however, is not the source of this strategy shift. Pit stop times remain stable compared to past years, with most circuits within a second of their previous averages. This rules out improved crew efficiency as the cause, pointing instead to the tyres themselves as the main driver of change. Teams are adapting to a new set of rules—one where the old assumptions no longer apply.

Charles Leclerc set the fastest 0-100 km/h acceleration of the 2026 season at Spa, hitting that mark in just 2.79 seconds. While this is a single data point, it highlights the growing importance of raw speed and performance in a season already dominated by strategy and tyre management.

The data paints a picture of a sport on the brink of transformation. With tyre degradation no longer following the expected pattern and the undercut proving more effective than ever, teams must constantly reassess their approach. The traditional playbook is outdated—what’s shaping up is a new era where adaptability and insight into ever-changing data will be the key to success.
