Electric power now drives strategy

The Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K) is now central to the car's performance. It provides power to the rear wheels and can recover up to 8.5 megajoules of energy per lap. That’s more than four times the amount it could before, giving teams more energy to work with. Gone is the MGU-H, which helped with heat recovery and turbocharging. The FIA decided to eliminate it because it was too complex and not closely related to the technology used in regular road cars. This change has simplified the power unit design but also made energy planning more crucial for race strategy.

With the new energy rules in place, teams must now be very careful about how they use the electric power. The manual override boost, allowed only during races, lets drivers push their cars to the limit. This boost was part of how Esteban Ocon reached an incredible 358 km/h during the 2026 Barcelona race. A look at past horsepower milestones

The 1,000 horsepower figure for 2026 isn’t the highest ever in Formula 1, but it does mark a big step forward in technology and sustainability. In the early 2000s, the V10 engines could produce about 950 hp, all from combustion, with no electric assistance at all. These engines revved to over 19,000 rpm in their final seasons. Then came the 2.4-litre V8 engines in 2006, which brought peak power down to around 720–750 hp. This shift was due to smaller displacement and a 18,000 rpm rev limit.

From 2014 to 2025, the hybrid era began, combining combustion power with electric assistance. The best systems of that time could deliver over 1,000 hp total, with combustion engines doing most of the heavy lifting and the electric motor adding around 160 hp. The MGU-H helped recover energy from exhaust heat, keeping the battery charged and the turbo spinning, making the whole system highly efficient. Now, with the 2026 regulations, the total remains around 1,000 hp, but almost half of that comes from electricity. This change is part of a long-term plan to make the sport more sustainable and technologically relevant to the road-car industry.
