Brennan's Sprint Seals Stage Win
Matthew Brennan, the 20-year-old rider for Visma-Lease a Bike, outpaced the chasing peloton in the uphill sprint to Alto del Castillo on stage 1 of the Vuelta a Burgos. Brennan's sixth victory of the season came under the protection of his team, which led the race for much of the 165-kilometre route.
Ben Tulett, Brennan's teammate, supported his sprint and finished second, securing a dominant 1-2 for the Dutch squad. Laurence Pithie of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe came in third, just behind Tulett.
Visma's Strategy Pays Off
Visma-Lease a Bike did most of the work to catch the early breakaway, which had been out front since 10km into the stage. The breakaway was made up of four riders from different teams, but the gap quickly closed in the final 2km. As the climb intensified, Visma’s lead-out train surged to the front.
Equipo Kern Pharma’s Marc Brustenga attempted a solo move with 800m left on the final climb but was quickly overtaken. Brennan used the team's pace to launch a late sprint in the final 200 metres, distancing himself from Tulett and the rest to take the win.
The breakaway group — Josh Burnett (Burgos Burpellet BH), Javier Ibáñez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Valentin Ferron (Cofidis), and Unai Aznar (Euskaltel-Euskadi) — led the race for most of the opening stage. However, the peloton, led by Visma, Netcompany Ineos and Lidl-Trek, closed the gap in the final 5km, ensuring a sprint finish.
With 30 seconds remaining before the line, the stage was up for grabs. Brennan’s acceleration at the end of the climb secured the victory, with Tulett holding off Pithie just behind. The Dutch team now controls the race with the first stage win under their belt.
