July volume numbers reflect growing market activity

Nodal Exchange announced record volumes in power, natural gas, and environmental futures in July 2026. The exchange reported 198.5 terawatt-hours of power futures traded, a 4% increase over July 2025. These figures highlight the ongoing demand and trust in the Nodal platform as a key player in energy trading.

The market saw open interest in U.S. power futures on Nodal hit 1.475 billion MWh, or $173 billion in notional value as of the month’s end. This reflects a growing reliance on the platform for energy trading, particularly in managing exposure across various market conditions.

Natural gas and environmental products also surged

Natural gas futures on Nodal rose sharply to 89.1 million MMBtu in July 2026, up 162% compared to the 34.0 million MMBtu in July 2025. The significant growth underscores the increasing importance of natural gas in the energy sector and Nodal’s role in facilitating those transactions.

The number of lots traded in environmental futures and options reached 48,183. Nodal posted 443,343 lots of open interest in environmental products by month’s end, an increase of 13% from a year earlier. The exchange also broke its own delivery record with 61,671 lots delivered, a 26% increase over the previous record set in July 2025, showcasing a strong demand for environmental commodities.

Nodal Exchange’s role in energy risk management

Paul Cusenza, Nodal’s chairman and CEO, said the platform is proud to serve the commodities markets and “very pleased to see strong performance across all markets.” These remarks reflect the company’s confidence in its ability to support participants in managing price, credit, and liquidity risks in the North American energy markets.

The exchange offers over 1,000 contracts on hundreds of unique locations, including renewable energy certificates and carbon futures. This extensive suite of products enables participants to hedge effectively. Nodal is part of EEX Group and clears all its contracts through Nodal Clear, a Commodity Futures Trading Commission registered derivatives clearing organization, ensuring robust compliance and security.
