Kimi Antonelli, just 19, made history at the Belgian Grand Prix by securing his sixth win of the season and moving 45 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the battle for the 2026 F1 title. With 10 of the 22 scheduled races now behind the grid, the young Italian’s success marked a dramatic turnaround from the lows he faced exactly a year earlier, when he was eliminated in the first qualifying session at the same track in a moment he later described as "rock bottom."
From rock bottom to redemption
The path from despair to dominance has been dramatic for Antonelli. During the 2025 season, while still just 18 years old, he faced a grueling stretch where he barely managed to finish in the top 10 over a span of ten Grand Prix races. Last year’s Belgium event became a symbolic low point as he was knocked out in Q1, leaving him with a deep mental challenge to overcome.
Reflecting after his stunning win in Spa-Francorchamps, Antonelli said, "Last year here, I probably reached the bottom, so it was a very difficult weekend for me mentally." This year, however, the results have told a different story, with Antonelli now leading the drivers' standings. He has recorded five wins in the past 10 races, and his best finish this season has been in the top two, with no finish worse than sixth.
Bad luck and brilliance
Though Antonelli is dominant, his lead might not be as large as the numbers suggest. Misfortunes along the way have affected his potential. He narrowly missed a podium in Barcelona when a sudden engine failure ended his race at the peak of his performance. Then, at Silverstone, a wheel guard failure left him out of the points when he was in the mix for victory. If those incidents had been avoided, his lead would be even more commanding.
Ferrari, who have a power unit that is currently less competitive than Mercedes', appear unlikely to close the gap unless they make a major technical breakthrough. Antonelli’s performance against his teammate George Russell, who began the season as the title favorite, further solidifies his strong position at the top.
Toto Wolff on the shock of consistency
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, acknowledged that the team was taken aback by Antonelli's remarkable consistency in the 2026 season. While he had anticipated a rollercoaster rookie year for the young driver, including ups and downs, the calm, focused approach that Antonelli has adopted this season was not something he predicted.
Wolff praised Antonelli's emotional composure and ability to stay level-headed, whether he was performing well or struggling. "It is absolutely transactional. What is the problem? And that is new."
This maturity has made a big difference for Antonelli and the team. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, he quickly shifts focus to solutions and the next challenge. "That is new" is how Wolff put it, highlighting how this disciplined mindset has played a key role in the young driver's success.
Despite his strong lead in the standings, Antonelli says he won’t let up or get complacent. He views the win as a "great redemption" for last year's tough experiences, but he is also aware of how quickly things in F1 can change. "I never want to relax too much," he told reporters.
